Getting ready for another adventure in France

 Bonjour,

We're getting ready for another travel adventure.  We're heading to Nice on Wednesday February 15, arriving on February 16.  We return to Toronto from Paris on March 23.

Nice, Marseille, Lyon, Paris (the four cities we'll be staying in)

We'll be spending 11 days in Nice, with a few day trips, most likely to Saint- Paul-de-Vence, Cannes and Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat.  Alain has never been to Nice, and I was only there briefly in the mid 1980s.

We then head to Marseille, a city we really like (plus we have cousins there).  This year, we'll be there for a week.  We plan to a day trip to Aix-en-Provence.

We then head to Lyon for a week.  Neither of us have been to Lyon.  Looking forward to Lyonnaise cuisine.

And finally Paris for the last 10 days of our trip.  We'll be staying in the 5eme arrondissement (Latin Quarter), where we stayed last year and many earlier trips.

As always, Allan will be "Alain" in France.  We will be staying in Airbnbs in each of the four cities we are visiting, and travelling between them by train.  

We are looking forward to exploring new cities and returning to favourites on our five week trip.

Free Tour in Nice- Exploring the City

Friday February 17 was a beautiful sunny day with a high of 14C.  It feels quite warm during the daytime with the sun out, but definitely cools off in the evenings.   We took a 'Free Tour' of the Old City (Vieux Nice) with Julia from Riviera Tours.  The tour started at 11:00 a.m. We met at the fountain in Place Masséna.  There were about 15 people on the tour.  Most were from Germany, with a few folks from the United States and other parts of France. The square is the largest in Nice and is where seating has been installed for Carnaval events.  Julia told us a bit about the history of Nice.   The Greeks settled the port (known as Nicaia- named after Nike, the Greek goddess of victory) in around 250 BC and were followed by the Romans.  Nice was also part of the House of Savoy which included parts of Italy.  The capital was Turin (where we were in October).  The initial shape of part of this square is similar to those in Turin.  Event...

Paris Fashion Stars

Thursday March 16 was a beautiful, sunny day with a high of 18C.  We headed out to Jack Gomme about a 30 minute walk from the apartment to pick up the bag I had ordered from the Marais store. Google Maps sent us on a bit of a round about route, but we walked through a nice farmers' market on Boulevard de Port-Royal, which turns into Boulevard du Montparnasse. Lots of nice fruits and veg In season produce Flowers too We passed the famous brasserie La Closerie des Lilas, once a favourite of Hemingway After picking up my bag, we took the Métro to the 16th arrondissement to see the Gold exhibit at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent. Visit to Èze and Drinks at L'hôtel Le Negresco

Thursday February 23 was a very cloudy day with a high of 13C, though it felt quite a bit cooler.  We caught a tram to the bus station and took the 11:00 a.m. bus to Èze, a scenic 30 minute ride.  Èze is only about 8.5 km northeast of Nice and is a beautiful medieval town perched on a hill above the coast. The population is around 2100.  Its inhabitants are known as Ezasques.   It was colonized millennia ago by the Greeks, Romans and also the Moors, who held the area until they were driven out by William of Provence in 973.  In 1388, Èze fell under the jurisdiction of the House of Savoy, who built up the town as a fortified stronghold because of its proximity to Nice.  It had a turbulent history over the next few centuries.  Louis XIV destroyed the walls surrounding the city in 1706 in the War of the Spanish succession.  Finally, in April 1860, Èze was designated as part of France by unanimous decision of its citizens.
